Power Rangers

This ever popular television series was adapted from the popular Japanese Tokusatsu franchise and premiered for the first time in October 2006. Since then the growing popularity of these magical teen heroes have put the hocus pocus magic of Harry Potter in the shade. Suited and booted in brightly coloured skin tight costumes, this slick group must rely on team work to win the day, combining martial arts skills and powerful magic.

The premise behind the Power Rangers fight against the dark forces stems from a battle which took place twenty years ago in a parallel dimension. An evil army tried to conquer the magical realm, the human realm and beyond, but were stopped by a legion of courageous wizards. The human world never learnt of this great battle nor do they know that this battle could easily be replayed once more. An earthquake in the town of Briarwood, America allowed a little evil to seep back into the human world. It is here that the Power Rangers must fight against the Master of the Underworld and his various minions.

The Power Ranger’s powers are derived from Ancient Titans, creatures with great elemental powers which are symbolized by the phoenix, garuda, mermaid, sprite and minotaur. Nick the red Mystic Ranger with the power of fire at his fingertips has a mystic racer, coveted by the show’s adolescent audience. Charlie, the self proclaimed super hero expert of the group dresses in striking yellow and wields the power of lightning. Blue Mystic Ranger Madison has the power of water. Vida her sister has shape shifting properties and dresses in pink, even though she’s a tomboy and hates the colour. Finally, green Mystic Ranger, Xander who comes from Australia can magically bulk up his muscles causing a whole generation of teenage girls to never miss an episode.

The Power Ranger personalities and powers have been tried and tested in various super hero formats before. However, the numerous villains are the visual stars of the show with their otherworldly bodies and ugly forms. Some of the fabulous evil misfits include Hekatoid, a gluttonous, green hammer-wielding toad monster, Megahorn, a sword throwing dragon creature with bone-like armour, and Itassis, a sphinx goddess with an arm-mounted bazooka, which is always handy. The evil forces on offer are much more interesting than the main teenage characters and almost make up for the predictable personalities which the Power Rangers portray.
